First Street, Prosper, Texas Wednesday, February 28, 2024 5:30 PM Robyn Battle, Executive Director Todd Rice, Communications Manager Devon Jett, Community Engagement Coordinator 2. Hot Topics with Mayor David Bristol (DB) Mayor Bristol began by asking the council for advice on topics they saw as important, whether from the perspective of a student or as members of the community. The council's ideas included: • Education on Culture and Jobs • Public Job Fair • Public Culture Fair The mayor then gave an overview of the latest hot topics of the town including the Flock Camera Safety System, local infrastructure development, the Capital Improvement Plan, new businesses, the Downtown Advisory Committee, Citizens Academy, and upcoming town -wide events. The council then circled back to the important topics or problems they thought of in the town. The problems included: • Voter registration, especially in school board elections • An appealing social media presence for education • Educating youth on duties of the mayor The council considered possible solutions for these problems such as a youth -run social media page, a series about the daily work of Town Council members and bringing in school broadcast teams to spread the word about MYAC. 3. Consider and act upon the minutes of the January 24, 2024, Mayor's Youth Advisory Council (MYAC) meeting. Julia Fahrenthold motioned to act upon the minutes, Anna Williams seconded the motion. None opposed the minutes, they were approved and signed. 4. Comments From the Public No comments were made by the members of the public present. 5. Discuss MYAC meeting length. (RIB) Robyn Battle asked members of the council if they would like to set a specific end time for the meetings or let them run until the discussion finished. The council proposed a 90-minute time frame, setting the designated end time to be 7:OOpm. William He called for a motion, and Maryn Shellberg seconded the motion. All voted in favor, the time for meetings is now set to 90 minutes. 6. Brainstorm ideas for MYAC programs, projects, initiatives, and goal -setting exercise. (RB) Robyn Battle and Devon Jett led the council in a goal -setting exercise to focus ideas and set priorities for the inaugural and future council classes. The goals were: • Goal 1: Offer Guidance to the Town Council on youth -related issues • Goal 2: Assist with special initiatives • Goal 3: Design and implement youth -centered events • Goal 4: Serve as ambassadors for the Town of Prosper A 5th Goal was then proposed: Participate in service opportunities in the community. William He motioned to add this to the goals, Rithika Chakrapani seconded the motion, all were in favor. William He then motioned to approve all goals, Rithika Chakrapani seconded the motion, and all were in favor of approval. The MYAC moved on to define each of these goals, coming up with projects or initiatives they could create to accomplish them. Their ideas included: • Goal 1: Mental health awareness • Goal 2: Accessibility initiatives for disabled residents, partnerships with other councils/foundations • Goal 3: STEM -centered education programs, partnership with other existing youth organizations, increasing social media presence, field day, cultural night, career night, MYAC education videos • Goal 4: Visit local businesses, participate in focus groups • Goal 5: Volunteering with community service at charities or food banks, creating a MYAC service project, partnering with Prosper Young Ladies Association or Young Men's Service League At the end of the brainstorming session, the MYAC came up with their specific action items which centered around youth involvement in the community government and opportunities for students to connect with Town Council members. 9. Requests for Future Agenda Items 1. Agenda Items 7 (Discuss the social media coordinator position) and 8 (Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Master Plan Volunteers) were postponed until the next meeting on March 27, 2024. 10. Adjourn William He motioned to adjourn, Shivani Ainampudi seconded it. The motion was approved unanimously. The meeting was adjourned at 7:00 pm. These minutes were approved on March 27, 2024.
